Weekend at the movies

Today is the first day of winter - we've already had two weeks worth!!! I don't think it even got above 5 degrees today and the wind has been blowing all day. Yesterday was just a bit better.

Carol and I went to see a movie yesterday. We saw Four Christmases with Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughan and a varied and interesting assortment of supporting cast playing members of their families. It was a hoot! We laughed and laughed! I can see why it has been at the top of the movies charts for a while.

Today I borrowed Baby Mama and watched it. A cute movie. Came from the library so no cost. Always a good way to keep the costs down.

Carol and I both get emails weekly from Goodrich Theaters. Along with the list of movies and times is a coupon for popcorn and pop. You choose the size - small to large. Compared to normal prices, it is a super good deal!! Definitely one you should sign up for. You can get information at your theater on how to sign up or just go to http://cgi5.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll Information is there about the mail lists and also about a new frequent moviegoers card which will also save you some money. Yes!

It's Christmas week - can you belive it? Take care!

Kids, traditions and smiley faces

People who know me know that I'm a smiley face person. I can't help it - they make me smile back! I've been signing Andrew's cards with a smiley face heart since he was 2. I figured he would recognize that even though he couldn't read the word "Mom". I draw smiley faces on card envelopes - usually with a hat to mark the occasion. During the winter when the car windows were covered, I would walk around the car cleaning off the windows while Andrew sat inside. When I got to his window, I always scraped a smiley face in the snow. And it always made him smile.

Tuesday was another nasty day. Snow and sleet and I didn't feel well. My sweet son took pity on me and picked me up to get some dinner. We ate at Pizza King - where I forgot to ask about a seniot discount. But it was good and we had a nice talk. When we left the sleet was already freezing on the windows. I sat in the car while he cleaned off the windows. When he got to my window there was a little pause. I looked out and he had drawn a smiley face in the ice!!! That was the sweetest surprise!

I'm glad for my son and traditions. Life is so much better with both!

Hope you've had a good week. Take care!

Yippee Skippee

Today was a good day to stay inside - windy and cloudy. Just listening to the wind always makes me so glad to be inside. It was a usual Sunday - reading a week's worth of papers, doing laundry, listing ebay...

I did get out for dinner. Went to AJ's which is a fairly new restaurant at 231 and State. They serve authentic Chicago style hot dogs, Italian Beef, burgers and brats. And a few more items including very yummy fries. I grew up outside of Chicago and one thing I have missed since I moved here many years ago is good TRUE Italian beef. AJ's has it! I was SOOOOO excited the first time I tried one! They are yummy!

After that we walked over to Silver Dipper. They have all kinds of ice cream items but I was very pleased to see they have mini-scoops. They are only 75 cents! Perfect for seniors or anyone on a budget or trying to eat smaller portions. I started looking but stopped when I saw this one - YIPPEE SKIPPEE. I tend to be one who says that on a regular basis so this was a must have. The ice cream had swirls of peanut butter, caramel and brownie bits. Very yummy! I didn't count how many flavors but there seemed to be a good choice. Stop in when you want that little bit of ice cream.

Sunday is ending - where DO these weekends go? Have a good week!

Cat Antics

I have two cats, Katie and Rizzo. Katie is the more sedate cat and Rizzo has always been the one to bounce off walls. She seems to appear in the most unexpected places - on top of the refrigerator, on top of the kitchen cabinets, on the other side of the door when I never saw her leave... The other day I walked out into the hallway and found her sitting on top of the washing machine. It's usually unexpected wherever I find her.

Yesterday Cindy and Andrew treated me to dinner at their house. Cindy made cornbread using her special recipe. I bartered my cheese ball for a piece of cornbread to have for breakfast. I was happily munching away when here came the beggar cats. Katie isn't much one for bread unless it's dipped in gravy but Rizzo likes most breads. I gave her a little piece of the cornbread and soon she was back for more. After a few pieces, she jumped up on my lap and stuck her head in the plastic bag. I guess the cornbread wasn't coming fast enough for her! I think maybe we need to package and market this treat!

Looking forward to sleeping soon so I'll be quick tonight. Here is today's discount tip. This is for all ages. If you have pets, check out this online store - www.petfooddirect.com . They regularly offer 10 - 22% discounts off your purchase. They have clearance items, too, for even more bargains. Plus you don't have to go pick up the items!

Hope you have had a good week. Take care!

Discount for crafting seniors

That's crafting not crafty! ;-) Though you will be crafty if you get these savings. Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts is having a 15% off total purchase senior discount day all day Weds., December 10. You have to be 60 or older (I'm bummed!) and need to take ID. The ad says all stores are participating so you should be good at the one nearest to you.

This is the perfect time of year to stock up on all your crafting supplies! Quilting, fleece blankets, cross stitch and more. That just makes me want to pick up my stitching and snuggle right in!

Enjoy your day!

Ahhh.... retirement!

I'm still among the working so retirement is something I dream of. My thrifting buddy, Ann, is retiring at the end of the month. Yesterday was her retirement party. It was great to see the current retirees there to send her off and welcome her to their ranks. Isn't it amazing how they all seem to look younger and healthier once they retire? :-)

One of her former bosses gave a little speech and said it well when she said she would like to welcome Ann to retirement - it's wonderful! And the rest of us could aspire to it. So so true!

It was a very nice party - lots of current and former coworkers and bosses. There were quite a few stories told with much laughter. Ann wanted only one thing for retirement - her chair. Not a Purdue rocking chair but the office chair she has sat in for much of her 40 years at Purdue. It's molded to her shape now and comfortable! Her managers did the paperwork and got it for her. A very fitting tribute to her hard work. Go Ann!

I read yesterday that many of the Krogers offer senior discount days. I want to say it is Tuesday but will have to check. It did say that it is up to the individual store so do check your local ones. 5% off on groceries sure can help!

It's quite chilly here which I don't like. When the sun is shining, it makes it all better. Take care!

Winter has arrived!

It's cold out! Not news to any of you I'm sure. What happened to our fall weather? It's December 1st and it's below 30 and snowing! So far we've not had much accumulation but it's the messy kind. Melt, freeze, snow, melt, freeze....

I am short and drive a Ford pickup. Clearing snow off the window is always a challenge. This morning I was out trying to scrape the ice and snow off with my small scraper. (When the sun was bright and days were warm, I took the long scraper out of the truck and now have no idea where it is!) I can reach about 1/3 across the window if I really stretch.

There is a dropoff of an inch or two between my driveway and my neighbor's yard. I usually park pretty close to that edge if I have to put the Toter back. Of course trash pickup was a day later this week so I moved it up Sat. and stayed inside all day yesterday. So there I was this morning trying to stretch to scrape my 1/3 of the window. Every time I got a good scraping motion going, my foot slid off into the grass. If you've been following along, you know falling is not good because of the knees so it was a struggle to stay upright. I can only imagine what people driving by thought as I stretched and slid, stretched and slid. These are the days when I'd like some of those Inspector Gadget arms!

It's windy tonight. It's comforting to be inside listening to it. Makes one grateful to have the home to be in!

Last Friday I went to Indy with a friend to go to Half Price Books Friday sale. Everything was 20% off from 7-10 a.m. No, we didn't get there at 7 but we made it in time to get the discount. Luckliy they were announcing the time every few minutes so I maximized my shopping by whipping my cart around the store telling everyone I passed to "Sprint for it!" I maybe saved $10 but it was the principle! We went across the street to the Original Pancake House. Highly recommend those cakes! They have all kinds. Found out they have a senior menu. Well, it's the kids menu but for seniors, too. So you get a meal with a cute name and a smaller size and price. Yay!

Hope you are staying warm and dry tonight. Take care!
