If you've been following along, you know I run a support group for knee replacement surgery (TippecaKnees). The whole reason I felt compelled to start that group was because so many people were getting no information or bad information from their doctors. I just encountered this again this week. Two of the questions I asked after my surgery were answered in very broad terms such as "Use common sense". Turns out there were a few more things I needed to know. I could have potentially reinjured my wrist by following that non-advice. It's a toss up as to whether I have no common sense or that is too broad but I would have tried to struggle through what probably would have happened had I not gotten better information from another source.
This event just brought back all my feelings after my knee surgery. I was so frustrated by non-answers and I could so easily have had an unsatisfactory outcome from my surgery. I hear similar things from people who email or call me about their surgeries. It makes me wonder how many of the people who have bad results from surgery got that way because their doctor didn't give them enough information.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD DOCS GONE???? I know there are still some out there - I have a few myself. And I am so very grateful to have found them! They listen, they answer, they don't rush me out the door. They educate me so that I can properly take care of myself. So it frustrates me greatly to run into one who doesn't seem to care. What is wrong with our medical system that we have so very many doctors that either feel pressured not to take the time or just don't care enough to spend the time working with their patients?
I guess I'm just another voice talking about the problems with the country's medical system. If you're reading this and you've found a good doctor or good information, please share that with someone else going through the same thing. If we all help each other, we will all be stronger.
Take care of you!
